“Holding Out For a Hero”

The other week, I saw Footloose on DVD. One of the songs from the soundtrack is Bonnie Tyler‘s “Holding Out For a Hero.” I’m not sure I’d heard it before, but it sounded incredibly familiar, and I couldn’t place it. Yesterday, I listened to Amazon’s clip from the soundtrack, and I realized immediately: It sounds just like Meat Loaf.

It turns out that “Holding Out For a Hero” was written by Jim Steinman, who wrote the Bat Out of Hell albums. He also wrote “Total Eclipse of the Heart,” Bonnie Tyler’s other big hit from the 80’s, and which also sounds like Meat Loaf, at least now that I’m thinking about it.

  1. He also wrote and produced “It’s All Coming Back To Me Now” by Celine Dion and “Making Love Out Of Nothing At All” by Air Supply which both sound similar to the songs you’ve already mentioned.

  2. I swear this song was also the soundtrack for a TV show in the 80s. I was just a kid then, and really cannot remember much except that there was a good looking guy playing a bodyguard? and that the actor died unexpectedly while firing blanks, or something. What a pity.

  3. if you find out the name of the show can you tell me what it is been thinking of what it was called for ages thanx

  4. Yeah Chocolatebaby I heard the song today and thought exactly what you did minus the good looking guy. Have searched 80s series but can’t anything on it!

  5. The show was called Cover Up as Joe said and yes the bodyguard (Jon-Erik Hexum, Norwegian) died like ChocolateBaby said above by placing a blank loaded .44 Magnum prop gun against his head and firing. The wadding from the blank shell shattered his skull. The accident happened on the Cover Up set on 12th October 1984 which ended the series. On 18th October Hexum was taken off life support.

  6. Actually, “Cover Up” continued with another star (Anthony Hamilton) but the damage was done, especially with television’s infamous “death slot” on Saturdays.

(I met Jennifer O’Neill in 2005 at the SC March for Life.)
